Last night, around 23.09 hours, a strong earthquake happened between the island of Nias and that of Simeuleu, with an intensity of 8,2 in the Richter scale. Our confrere, Fr. Markus Tulu SVD, reported from Medan, that around 90% of the village Teluk Dalam was once again destroyed. That village was also destroyed during the last tsunami on December 26th. Meanwhile the city Gunung Sitoli, capital of the civil district (kabupaten) Nias, which was spared by the last disaster, has now been heavily damaged. The road between the airport and the city Gunung Sitoli is disrupted so that four wheelers cannot pass it. Only motor cycles can pass. Electricity and telephones do not work, only cell phones can send SMS, if and where there is a signal.
Fr. Paul Payong, SVD, repots from Medan that in Aceh Singkil (island near Banda Aceh), one of the places where VIVAT-PADMA serves, the water level increased by 3 meters. Our office there was flooded, and our instruments inside the building, like computer, etc. was lost. There was nobody in the office, because all our helpers had gone home to Medan and Lawedesky to celebrate Easter. Furthermore, very many houses were flooded and many residents began fleeing to higher places and mosques. And they need food and other material.
Today Fr. Markus Tulu, SVD will go to Sibolga. From there, he will take the boat to Nias, because planes find it diffiult to land in the airport of Gunung Sitoli. Tonight Fr. Paul Payong, SVD will go to Aceh Singkil in order to bring food and other help.
We do not yet have any news about victims and we have not yet received information about destruction in other places because communication is still difficult.
With this information I also ask for help so that we can give "emergency" help to Nias as well as to Aceh Singkil. The first emergency funds received are almost used up. We will certainly soon need more funds, especially in Nias and Singkil.

Lieber P. General!
Ich möchte Dir von der Arbeit vom VIVAT-PADMA-Team auf der Insel Nias nach dem Erdbeben bis zum heutigen Tag kurz berichten.
Nach der Absprache mit der Diözese Sibolga, das indonesische Team VIVAT-PADMA ist zuständig für den Bereich Gesundheit. Das heisst, wir müssen Ärzte, Krankenpfleger und Medikamente für Nias suchen und organisieren. Bis jetzt ist mir gelungen, Ärzte, Krankenpfleger und Medikamente zu finden. Bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt haben wir 5 Ärzte und 8 freiwillige Krankenpfleger nach Nias geschickt. Zurzeit arbeiten 2 Ärzte und 3 Krankenpfleger in Kota Teluk Dalam, 2 Ärzte und 4 Krankenpfleger in der Pfarrei Tuhemberua (das ist die Steyler Pfarrei) und nur 1 Arzt mit 2 Krankenpflegern in der Hauptstadt Gunung Sitoli, weil es da schon viele Ärzte sowie Krankenpfleger sowie aus Indonesien als auch aus dem Ausland gibt.
Wegen der Schwierigkeiten mit Transport hat P. Kris Kia SVD am vergangenen Samstag, den 9 April 2005 ein Schiff gemietet, um unsere 12 Leute (2 Ärzte, 4 Krankenpfleger, 5 Fratres aus Ledalero und ein Mitglied von PADMA) direkt von Sibolga zur Pfarrei Tuhemberua auf Nias Insel zu bringen, ohne in Gunung Sitoli aufzuhalten. Neben den Freiwilligen hat das Schiff auch Medikamente und Lebensmittel sowie 25 Tonnen Reis, Supermie (asiatischer Nudel) und Trinkwasser. Unsere beiden Mitbrüder, P. Servas Dange SVD und P. Herman Dapin SVD waren sehr glücklich, weil unsere Hilfe rechtzeitig angekommen ist. Es gibt ca. 200 Familien, die in den Zelten neben unserem Pfarrheim wohnen. Ihnen müssen auch unsere beiden Mitbrüder das Essen geben, obwohl die beiden auch in Not sind. Sie sind dankbar, dass die Hilfe rechtzeitig angekommen ist, dass sie den Bedürftigen helfen können. Es gibt Berichte, dass die Leute hier seit dem Erdebenen noch keine Hilfe erhalten haben. Wir können es auch verstehen, weil die Strassen total kaputt sind. Lastwagen oder Autos können nicht durchfahren, um die Lebensmittel zu transportieren.
Nach dem Du, P. General diese Situation wahrgenommen hast, kannst Du vielleicht verstehen, dass wir den großen Teil der ersten Hilfe vom Generalat gebraucht haben. Von US$ 50.000,- haben wir ca. US$ 30.000,- für die Bedürfnisse auf der Insel Nias verwendet. Wir müssen auch denken, dass das Team VIVAT-PADMA nicht nur auf der Insel Nias sondern auch in Aceh-Singkil arbeitet, wo das Erdbeben auch vieles zerstört hat. Deshalb haben P. Paul Payong SVD und P. Charles Lanang SVD Lebensmittel gekauft und nach Singkil sowie Pulau Banyak gebracht. Sie haben ca. US$ 18.000, verwendet. Das heisst, wir haben ca. US$ 48.000,- gebraucht. In unserer Hand sind nur noch US$ 2.000,-.
Mit diesem Email möchte ich Dich und Deinen Rat fragen, wie die Hilfe vom Generalat weitergeht. Gibt es noch Geld für unsere Arbeit für die Nothilfe auf der Insel Nias und Singkil, oder gibt es nicht mehr? Und wenn es noch Geld für uns gibt, bis zu welchem Monat wird die Nothilfe zu Ende sein? Und wie viel Geld wollt ihr für diese Nothilfe ausgeben? Das Ziel meiner Frage ist zu wissen und etwas Ahnung zu haben, damit wir nötige Schritte für die Zukunft planen können. Und wenn es keine Hilfe mehr gibt, werden wir versuchen, richtige Schritte zu wagen.

Dear Fr. General,
Allow me to present a short report about the work of the VIVAT-PADMA-Team on Nias Island after the March 28 earthquake.
The Diocese of Sibolga has asked VIVAT-PADMA-Indonesia to take over the responsibility in the area of health care. Thus we are expected to organize the coming of doctors, nurses and medicines for the victims on Nias. That’s why I have looked for doctors and nurses and also bought the medicines for Nias. Up to now 5 doctors and 8 nurses have gone to Nias. 2 doctors and 2 nurses are working now in Teluk Dalam, 2 doctors and 4 nurses in the SVD Parish in Tuhemberua. Only 1 doctor and 2 nurses are working in the capital of Nias, Gunung Sitoli, because here there are already a number of doctors and nurses from different social institutions in Indonesia as well as from abroad.
Because of the difficulty of transport to Tuhemberua, last Saturday, 9 April 2005, Fr. Kris Kia SVD hired a ship to bring our volunteers (12 people: 2 doctors, 4 nurses, 5 Fraters from Ledalero and 1 PADMA-Team volunteer) directly from Sibolga to the Parish Tuhemberua on Nias without passing through Gunung Sitoli. The ship brought also medicines and food: 25 tons of rice, “supermie”, and water.
Both our confreres, Fr. Servas Dange SVD and Fr. Herman Dapin SVD, were very happy because our help came on time. About 200 families are living in tents close to our parish house. Certainly our confreres felt they had to provide them with food and other necessities, but our confreres too had practically nothing. Fortunately, our help came on time and now our two confreres can help these families in the area. We’ve heard that after the earthquake people have not received any help yet, especially the victims in Tuhemberua. It is probably due to the fact that the roads have been destroyed. Four wheel vehicles cannot use the road to bring food to the people.
Considering this situation I hope you will understand that the financial help we have received from you, US$ 50.000 have been used immediately -- about US$ 30.000 for Nias. On the other hand, as you know, the VIVAT-PADMA Team is also working in Aceh-Singkil that was also heavily destroyed by the same earthquake. In the meantime, Fr. Paul Payong SVD and Fr. Charles Lanang SVD have bought food and brought them to Singkil and Pulau Banyak. For this they spent about US$ 18.000. That means we have used about US$ 48.000. Now we still have only about US$ 2.000.
That’s why I want to ask you through this email, if we can still get help from you. Are you and your council still ready to support us for the emergency needs in Nias and Singkil? If you are still ready to help, for how long are you going to help? And how much money is still available for this project? The aim of my question is to get idea of our resources and to plan our work step by step. If we cannot expect help anymore, then we will try to reorganize accordingly.
