TWO NEW SVD BISHOPS

oday, May 11, 2009, at noon, the Vatican Radio announced that Pope Benedict has named Bishops two of our confreres: Fr. Alangaram Arokia Sebastian Durairaj, SVD and Fr. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD.

Mons. Alangaram Arokia Sebastian Durairaj SVD

The Holy Father has appointed Fr. Alangaram Arokia Sebastian Durairaj, SVD Bishop of the Diocese of Khandwa in India. Fr. Durairaj is the actual Provincial of the Indian Central Province (INC) and chairman of SVD Formation Board in India. The Bishop-elect’s first assignment was INC, at the College Seminary in Bhopal. He then went for further studies in the US and obtained a doctorate in psychology. Upon his return to India, he worked for a year at the Indore Spirituality Centre. Prior to his being elected Provincial from 2005-2008, he was Rector of the College Seminary in Bhopal. He was re-appointed Superior Provincial of INC for a second term (2008-2011).

The Diocese of Khandwa came into existence formally on February 3, 1977 and it is comprised of four civil districts: Khandwa, Khargone, Burhanpur and Barwani. On June 29, 1999 Mons. Leo Cornelio SVD was appointed Bishop of Khandwa. Later, on June 15, 2007, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Bhopal.

Mons. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD

The Holy Father has named Fr. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD Bishop of the Diocese of Jhabua in India. Mons. Ganawa’s first assignment was INC. He served on the provincial council for two terms and was Rector of the SVD Juniorate in Palda for one term. From 1996-2002, he was Superior of the District of Jhabua. In 2002, he was elected Superior of the Udaipur District, a position he held until 2005. Mons. Ganawa currently works at the Mission Pastoral Centre in Meghnagar and at the same time is the Vice District Superior of Jhabua.

• Actual assignment: Vice District Superior of the Jhabua District and Mission Pastoral Center (Maghnagar)

The Diocese of Jhabua was erected on March 25, 2002. The diocese is formed by territories separated from the dioceses of Indore and Udaipur. Mons. Ganawa replaces Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal, SVD, the first bishop of Jhabua, who was appointed Bishop of Indore on October 24, 2008, replacing the late Bishop George Anathil, SVD.

We share the joy of our two confreres over their appointments. By naming our two confreres to the Episcopal Ministry, the Holy Father and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples have expressed the confidence of the Holy See in our Society.

The pastoral service that will be assumed by bishops-elect Mons. Durairaj and Mons. Ganawa will not be easy. They need our prayers and support so that they will be good pastors for the Dioceses of Khandua and Jhabua.

May the Spirit assist Mons. Durairaj and Mons. Ganawa so that they continue to radiate the “goodness and kindness of God” through their life and work (cfr. Prologue of the Constitutions).

Dos Nuevos Obispos SVD

oy, 11 de marzo de 2009, a mediodía, la Radio Vaticana anunció que el Santo Padre se ha dignado nombrar Obispos a dos de nuestros cohermanos: el P. Alangaram Arokia Sebastián Durairaj, SVD y el P. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD.

Mons. Alangaram Arokia Sebastián Durairaj, SVD

El Santo Padre ha nombrado al P.Alangaram Arokia Sebastián Durairaj, SVD, Obispo de la Diócesis de Khandwa (India). El P Durairaj es el actual Provincial de India Central y coordinador del Equipo de Formación de la SVD en la India. La primera misión del nuevo obispo fue la provincia INC, en el Seminario en Bhopal. Después fue a estudiar a los EE.UU. y obtuvo un doctorado en psicología. Cuando regresó a la India, trabajó durante un año en el Centro de Espiritualidad en Indore. Antes de ser elegido Provincial (2005-2008), fue Rector del Seminario en Bhopal. Fue reelegido Provincial de INC para un segundo periodo (2008-2011).

La Diócesis de Khandwa comenzó a existir formalmente el 3 de febrero de 1977. La Diócesis tiene cuatros distritos civiles: Khandwa, Khargone, Burhanpur y Barwani. El 29 de junio de 1999, Mons. Leo Cornelio fue nombrado Obispo de Khandwa. Mas tarde, el 15 de Junio de 2007, fue nombrado Arzobispo de Indore.

Mons. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD

El Santo Padre ha nombrado al P. Devprasad John Ganawa, SVD, Obispo de la Diócesis de Jhabua (India). El primer destino del P. Ganawa fue la Provincia INC. Fue consejero provincial por dos periodos y Rector del Juniorado en Palda por un periodo. De 1996 a 2002 fue Superior del Distrito de Jhabua. En 2002 fue elegido Superior del Distrito de Udaipur y estuvo en este cargo hasta 2005. Mons. Ganawa actualmente trabaja en el Centro Pastoral de Meghnagar y, al mismo tiempo, es el Vice Superior del Distrito de Jhabua.

La Diócesis de Jhabua fue erigida el 25 de marzo de 2002. Está formada por territorios separados de las Diócesis de Indore y Udaipur. Mons. Ganawa reemplaza al Obispo Chaco Thottumarickal, primer obispo de Jhabua, que fue nombrado Obispo de Indore el 24 de octubre de 2008 reemplazando el difunto Obispo George Anathil, SVD.

Compartimos la alegría de nuestros cohermanos al ser nombrados obispos. Con el nombramiento de estos dos cohermanos al Ministerio Episcopal, el Santo Padre y la Congregación para la Evangelización de los Pueblos han manifestado la confianza de la Santa Sede en nuestra Congregación.

El servicio que asumen los nuevos obispos, Mons. Durairaj y Mons. Ganawa no es nada fácil. Necesitan de nuestra oración y apoyo para ser buenos pastores de las Diócesis de Khandua y Jhabua.

Que el Espíritu los asista para que continúen irradiando la bondad y la benignidad de Dios en su vida y acción. (Cfr. Prologo de las Constituciones)
