New SVD Bishop of the diocese of Niigata in Japan

Fr. Paulo Daisuke NARUI, SVD

At noon today, May 31, 2020, the Vatican announced that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has named our confrere, Fr. Paulo Daisuke NARUI, SVD, Ordinary of the diocese of Niigata in Japan.

Fr. Narui is currently the Coordinator of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) of our Congregation (2012-2020). Besides, he is the Executive Secretary of VIVAT International (2018-2020) and the Vice President of Africa Europe Faith and Justice Network (AEFJN, 2018-2020). Prior to that Fr. Narui was the Executive Director of Caritas Japan (2006-2013). He was also member of the provincial council of Japan (2008-2013), and the formator of the SVD Seminary in Nagoya (2006-2007; 2008-2011).

The Apostolic Prefecture of Niigata was established on August 13, 1912 and included the three prefectures of Akita, Yamagata and Niigata that had belonged to Hakodate Diocese as well as the three prefectures of Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui that had belonged to Tokyo Archdiocese. It was entrusted to Society of the Divine Word. The first Apostolic Prefect was Joseph Reiners, SVD. He was succeeded by Fr. Anton Ceska, SVD in 1926. On April 16, 1962 Niigata was raised to the status of a diocese. After four non-SVD Apostolic Prefects and Bishops, on May 14, 2004, Fr. Isao Kikuchi, SVD was appointed Bishop of Niigata. Bishop Kikuchi served as Bishop of Niigata until his appointment as Archbishop of Tokyo on October 25, 2017. The diocese of Niigata became vacant as of his installation day on December 16, 2017; Abp. Kikuchi was appointed as Apostolic Administrator.

By naming our confrere to the Episcopal Ministry, the Holy Father and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples have once again expressed the confidence of the Holy See in our Society.

The pastoral service that will be assumed by Bishop-elect Fr. Narui will not be easy. He needs our prayers and support. May the Holy Spirit assist Fr. Narui so that he continues to radiate the “goodness and kindness of God” through his life and work (cfr. Prologue of the Constitutions).

Hoy, 31 de mayo de 2020, al mediodía, el Vaticano anunció que Su Santidad, el Papa Francisco, ha nombrado a nuestro cohermano, el Padre Paulo Daisuke NARUI, SVD, Obispo de la diócesis de Niigata en Japón.

El P. Narui es actualmente el coordinador de Justicia, Paz e Integridad de la Creación (JUPIC) de nuestra Congregación (2012-2020). Además, es el secretario ejecutivo de VIVAT International (2018-2020) y el vicepresidente de África Europa Faith and Justice Network (AEFJN, 2018-2020). Antes de eso el P. La Prefectura Apostólica de Niigata se estableció el 13 de agosto de 1912 e incluía las tres prefecturas de Akita, Yamagata y Niigata que habían pertenecido a la Diócesis de Hakodate, así como las tres prefecturas de Toyama, Ishikawa y Fukui que habían pertenecido a la Arquidiócesis de Tokio. La prefectura fue confiada a la Congregación del Verbo Divino. El primer prefecto apostólico fue Joseph Reiners, SVD, quien fue sucedido por el P. Anton Ceska, SVD, en 1926. El 16 de abril de 1962, Niigata fue elevada al estatus de diócesis. Después de cuatro prefectos apostólicos y obispos no-SVD, el 14 de mayo de 2004, el P. Isao Kikuchi, SVD, fue nombrado obispo de Niigata. El obispo Kikuchi desempeñó su ministerio como obispo de Niigata hasta su nombramiento como arzobispo de Tokio el 25 de octubre de 2017. La diócesis de Niigata quedó vacante desde el día de su instalación el 16 de diciembre de 2017; arzobispo Kikuchi fue nombrado administrador apostólico.

Al nombrar a nuestro cohermano al ministerio episcopal, el Santo Padre y la Congregación para la Evangelización de los Pueblos han manifestado una vez más la confianza de la Santa Sede en nuestra Congregación.

El servicio pastoral que el obispo-electo P. Narui asume no es fácil. Él necesita nuestras oraciones y apoyo. Que el Espíritu Santo ayude al P. Narui para que continúe irradiando la “bondad y la benignidad de Dios” en su vida y acción (cfr. Prólogo de las Constituciones).
